Term of IDE/ATA/P-ATA/S-ATA

IDE

IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics.  It is a general term for interface of the devices such as hard disc /ODD (CD&DVD), etc. which are supported by a general main board.

S-ATA I

It is important to know ATA device first.

ATA stands for Advanced Technology Attachment.  It is a standard for connecting CD-ROM drive or hard disc device to IDE interface.  ATA is divided in two parts: P-ATA (E-IDE), CD-ROM standard and S-ATA device, the latest version.

Those are the brief information about the ATA standard.

Here is information about P-ATA and S-ATA.

First,

The letter P in P-ATA stands for parallel.

Data moves through several cables in parallel.  ATA-100 and ATA-133 hard disc are all P-ATA method.

ATA-100 has 100MB/S standard (the maximum transfer rate per second), and ATA-133 has 133MB/S standard.

It uses a wide 40pin cable which is used in general hard and CD-ROM.  By using a parallel method, two devices are connected in one cable (Master/Slave).

IDE / E-IDE / ATA-100 / ATA-133 are connected with 40pin cable.

Second,

The letter S in S-ATA stands for serial.

It is the latest version of ATA standard and used in hard disc.

It is an in-line data transfer method with narrow cable (2cm wide).  It has faster transfer rate than existing P-ATA.

The standards of S-ATA I and S-ATA II are S-ATA method, and one device can be connected to only one cable and one port.

S-ATA I has 10MB/S standard (the maximum transfer rate per second), and S-ATA II has ??GB/S standard.

What is SCSI?

SCSI stands for Small Computing System Interface.  It is mainly used in expensive system environment such as server environment, workstation, etc.  It is driven with fast RPM (10,000rpm~15,000rpm), which is different point from ATA.  It is the product with all kinds of advantages that ODD device is supposed to have such as fast transfer rate, long lifespan, stable data preservation, low system occupation, etc.

Its disadvantage is that it is 2~5 times more expensive than general ATA device, and the price of its controller is also high.  Therefore, it is not used in general PC.
